## Border Patrol surveillance is reaching local police

**Border Patrol teams are analyzing Americans’ financial activity and other data, then passing intelligence to local police who make traffic stops, 404 Media reports.** The outlet identified the teams as Predictive Intelligence Targeting Teams, or PITT, in Border Patrol’s Spokane and Laredo sectors, and reported that they draw on law-enforcement-sensitive systems to develop leads for local officers. **Indiana State Police is seeking about $30 million in Justice Department funding for investigative technology including covert cameras, vehicle-identification tools and cell-phone-location systems.** The agency says it would not change its immigration work if it wins the grant, but its application describes existing detainments, ICE operations and intelligence referrals through the 287(g) program. ## Salvadoran TPS reaches its printed end date

**September 9 is the printed end date for the current Salvadoran TPS extension, not a turn-the-clock-off date.** DHS had to review the designation at least 60 days earlier; a termination would require public notice and could not take effect less than 60 days after publication. If DHS did not make the required negative determination, TPS continues automatically for six months. As of Wednesday morning, no notice extending or terminating the designation appears in the Federal Register. ## Appeals court leaves IRS–ICE data-sharing block in place

**A federal appeals court left in place a preliminary order blocking an IRS procedure used to provide taxpayer information to ICE.** The D.C. Circuit said the procedure violated Section 6103’s confidentiality rules; more than 47,000 taxpayer records had already been disclosed. The ruling is preliminary, not a final decision on the merits. ## Judge signals possible action on student-status rule

**A judge in Massachusetts signaled that he may act before September 15 on DHS’s rule ending duration of status for F-1 students, certain J exchange visitors and I media representatives.** Duration of status is the open-ended admission period that lets them remain if they comply with their program terms. Under the rule, admission would carry a fixed end date; anyone needing more time could have to seek an extension or status change. The rule has not been blocked.
